There are five types of ejector pins:

Type 1 is 65MN, or 1.2343 ejector pins with nitriding surface treatment. Normally, this kind of ejector pin is made without any heat treatment. Due to no heat treatment after rough turning, they can be ground with lower hardness, which saves a lot of processing time. Therefore, they are the cheapest pins at present in the China market.

But I have to say, due to no fine grinding after heat treatment, generally speaking, their tolerance is higher. For example, their diameter of shaft tolerance is 0.02~0.03mm, and their diameter of head tolerance is 0.2mm.

Type 2 is hot working steel 1.2343/SKD61 ejector pins with vacuum heat treatment. Their machining process is: rough turning→ vacuum heat treatment → fine grinding. Normally, hardness is 48 – 52 HRC.

Type 3 is hot working steel 1.2343/SKD61 ejector pins with vacuum heat treatment and nitriding surface treatment. As a result, internal hardness can reach 48 – 52 HRC and external hardness can reach 900HV. Or HSS ejector pins such as 1.3343/SKH 51 with vacuum heat treatment 58 -62 HRC.

Type 4 is hot working steel 1.2343/SKD61 ejector pins with vacuum heat treatment 48 -52 HRC. Or HSS ejector pins such as 1.3343/SKH 51 with vacuum heat treatment 58 -62 HRC. Both can be processed with DLC coating. As a result, surface hardness can reach 2000 ~3000HV.

2. What are the applications for different ejector pins?

Due to different production processes, the four types of ejector pins have different features and performances. To choose the right ejector pins for your plastic injection or die casting, please see the four tips below:

Tip 1: For low-output and low requirements molds with a working life of less than 100,000 and mold cores made by normal pre-hardened steel, we recommend Type 1 ejector pins.

Tip 2: For middle-output and middle requirements molds with a working life of between 100,000 to 500,000，Type 1 ejector pins are a good choice.

Tip 3: For high-output and high requirements molds with a working life of between 500,000 to 1,000,000，we suggest Type 3 ejector pins.

Tip 4: For high-precision and high requirements molds with a working life of more than 1,000,000，we suggest Type 4 ejector pins.

Tip 5: To satisfy your need for special molds, consider ejector pins with DLC coating.

Let’s expand on the subject of ejector pins with DLC coating. Compared to general ejector pins, they are very special. If your molds have special requirements such as those listed below, we recommend that you use DLC-coated ejector pins.

• Injection circle time is short.
• Lubricating oil can’t be used, such as for medical molds.
• Gas will be created during plastic injection, such as with raw materials that contain glass fiber resin or engineering plastics.
• Ejector pins wear out easily, such as when die casting molds or with raw materials containing glass fiber resin.

3. What are the material grades for ejector pins in the China market?

Grade 1: Original imported steel, such as 1.2343 and 1.3343 from Groditz, Germany or SKD61 and SKH51 from DAIDO and HITACHI. As world famous brand steel manufacturers, their features and performance regarding toughness, plasticity, and abrasion resistance are excellent. Therefore, their prices are much more expensive. Moreover, sometimes steel agencies don’t have the specifications you need, so it will take several weeks for them to import.

Grade 2: Steel from famous Chinese brand steel companies such as BAOWU, SHAGANG, HBIS, Ansteel, and SHOUGANG, etc. Their features and performance are not as good as original imported steel, but their steel is much cheaper. Meanwhile, these steel agencies can offer a large stock and complete models.

Grade 3: Steel from ordinary steel companies in China, such as Dalian DONGFEI, Hebei WENFENG, and Huangshi DAYE, etc. If you don’t have a high demand for ejector pins, this is a good choice for you to save material costs.

4. What different ejector pins suppliers are located in Dongguan, China?

World famous brand enterprises

MISUMI and PUNCH have a large stock and complete models of standard mold parts, including ejector pins. They also have their own heat treatment workshop, offer good quality materials, and supply custom ejector pins. If you need a prompt delivery time for special orders, however, they may not be a good choice for you. As you know, they are big companies, so their working flow is much more complex than other medium-sized and small enterprises.

Middle-Sized enterprises

Middle-sized enterprises are the main components of mold parts industries in Dongguan City. Some factories focus on standard mold parts, including ejector pins. Generally speaking, however, they don’t have complete stocks like MISUMI and PUNCH.

For example, they only have partial models of standard ejector pins. Some factories focus on custom ejector pins. In my opinion, they are much more competitive than brand enterprises, both in price and delivery time.

Micro enterprises

Micro enterprises can also be called small workshops. They are strong in some specific areas; for example, fine grinding threads, grinding extremely small ejector pins, and grinding big conical degrees.
